Day 61/62: Back in the Saddle (Again)

It's been an interesting weekend. I have been without one of my supplements for some time, and it has been an unrequited disaster for me. I am normally very mellow, having a good day all the time, but today my mood has been all over the place, moody and temperamental and everything! It totally sucked. I went running this morning, and since my fiancé was in the "guest room" where I normally sleep, my phone charger was in there, and my phone had completely crapped out. I had no timer, and not having a timer is like kryptonite to me. I only made it for a little while and felt completely discouraged. The negative self-talk made a guest appearance, and I was just berating myself for not being able to make it as far. I know now that it was a lot warmer and more humid than I was used to running in, and that probably slowed me down. Plus, I have been down for several days due to injury, so the fact that I had a pretty good run was not bad! I just couldn't wrap my head around it that morning. Add it to perpetual problems with my perpetually dishonest bank and I just couldn't handle it. I was emotionally worn down and thought I wouldn't be able to even get my supplements.

My fiancé was a perpetual blessing to me, calming me down and eventually paying for my supplements, which was a godsend. My mood is back to normal, and so is my appetite. Before I was ravenous and craving pretty much anything that was bad for me. Now I have only eaten a light meal this afternoon and have been fine. :-) I will have a protein shake for dinner since I missed it this morning.

I plan on picking up some hummus tomorrow and some veggies of some sort. I love my hummus and veggie combos, they really hit the spot when I'm having a bad day or just need something that tastes good. For those of you that don't know, my name is Shelly (AKA Girl on Fire) and I'm a hummus addict, lol! I had no good words to say to a certain retail chain that replaced the classic hummus and pretzel combos with the red pepper hummus. Thankfully my school stocks all three flavors of hummus and pretzels in the cafeteria, so there is always something yummy and healthy at school. :-) Plus, I notice a huge drop in my weight when I go to school, must be that brain food!

I have to admit, I never knew how much I needed the little buggers until I was unable to get them! I know people hate on supplements, and say you don't need a magic pill and all that, and I get that, but these have put me in a really good place emotionally as well. I have been able to get out and run everyday, I am always in a good mood, and I don't eat bad. Don't knock it til you try it. :-)

I hope everyone has a fantastic day. Be blessed and enjoy the journey!

Day 49: Lemon Drop 5k and Race Results

Sorry about the delay in posting. I took care of my sister all day yesterday and the day before I was just in a foul mood and couldn't shake it. But today I'm in a great mood and can't wait to post more on my race today.

My fiancé and I went to Frontenac, MO this morning (about a 20 minute drive from my house in St Charles, MO) for the Lemon Drop 5k. We saw our guys at S2 there, and we decided to enter the drawing for a BMR Bliss Go Pack. Sadly, I didn't win even though I had my fingers, toes, and everything else crossed, lol. :-D We were the last to pace, since we run around 20 minute miles on a good day, but we were off. I ran some of the race (about 0.75 to 1 mile worth) and walked a lot of it. I wanted to pace myself so that I wouldn't tire in the middle of the race and have to not finish. The fiancé was ahead of me most of the time but I was okay with that... most of the time. I brought my Sports Beans and was popping them periodically throughout. They were a little sour but otherwise pretty awesome. :-) They definitely gave me the energy to get done with the race.

The final results were as follows:

Me- Time: 57:15 Pace: 18:26/mi Rank: 154
Bryan- Time: 56:45 Pace: 18:16/mi Rank: 33

I think we may have come in dead last in both our divisions but the fun thing was that we didn't finish last overall and we had an awesome time. We both missed our Phormula-1 shakes because they ran out but I may go hassle my supplement guy sometime this week and get some of that stuff. I would love something for a recovery shake. :-) But I digress. Bryan had some bread and oranges at the free food counter but I didn't, lol. :-D

Here is a photo of me from after the race. Not the most flattering of photos, but hey, I don't mind:

Yes, I'm wearing ACTUAL running clothes this time. :)

I am so glad I got to do this, and Bryan and I will be running a 5k later in December called the Hot Chocolate 5k. We are both totally looking forward to that one because there will be a chocolate expo and all kinds of goodies. And that one will be more crowded and a bit flatter. And cold, I'm sure, lol. :-)

I hope everyone has a fantastic day. I will be doing some chemistry homework to catch up with the stuff I missed this weekend, and having an awesome protein shake for dinner since I missed mine this morning. (We went to Denny's, for shame! But at least I got the healthy egg white omelet.) Be blessed all and enjoy the nice weather!

Day 38.5: A Role Model And *Gasp* A Secret About Me!

I find it so odd that people look up to me.

Maybe that's my old self-esteem issues getting in my way, but I sometimes find it hard to believe that people care about my life so much that they would follow my blogs religiously or post every day on there. :-) I'm always grateful, but always just a touch perplexed.

Being a role model is weird. I'm always recognized in my favorite nutrition shop. First of all, I have a favorite nutrition shop. :-D The last time I was universally recognized it was at Buffalo Wild Wings and El Mariachi where they knew what I was going to order before I even ordered, because I had been there so often. Now, if I go in to the nutrition shop, they know who I am, and what I'm usually there for. (Which is either supplements or for a question on nutrition.) If I go to the gym, they know I require a towel to pat the profusely dripping sweat off my face, and no further assistance. Unless the person at the desk is new, this is usually what happens, before I even ask. I am recognized at the gym FINALLY, and I've been going there for 3 years! I just never was very consistent with my workouts so they never saw me. :-)

I also notice that I have totally changed my shopping habits and whatnot. I had to withdraw all my funds from my bank account to cash only because I was so put out by my bank and their particular brand of bs (more about that another time), and it wasn't a whole heck of a lot but I had my pick of things to buy. Before, that would have gone directly to funding my soda and chips addiction. I realized when I was driving by the new Shell station that I didn't have to worry anymore about who had the cheapest soda, and if I had enough to last me for the week. I still have two cases of soda and a 20 oz bottle that haven't been touched in almost a month, just in case I really needed it. I haven't touched it, and I go past it all the time.

Also, I had a nasty shopping addiction. Like, I would go broke 2 days after getting a paycheck. I don't know exactly why, but I have completely lost the urge to shop. In fact, I don't really get out and shop too often, and usually its limited to the grocery store or the supplement shop. I love to go to True Runner and peruse, but I still haven't bought anything from there, lol. :-D It could be that I just don't like traditional running shorts (the inseam is literally less than the length of my thumb! You best not sit awkwardly in those.) or running clothes, or that I'm not quite sized in to them yet. Either way, I don't buy there often. :-)

So anyway, all that to say, I'm still continually shocked simultaneously by what I seem to be capable of, and what other people seem to think I'm capable of, both in the positive and negative. I still have people in my life that are trying to convince me to settle for less, even after they've seen what I accomplished. They even accuse me of being obsessed with exercise. I guess they would rather I was obsessed with drugs or partying. There is nothing wrong with being a little obsessive at first. Eventually, it will wear off. :-) So yeah, just got to shrug off the haters and move on. :-)

I hope everyone is enjoying their week. :-) I sure am, I was down 3 lbs this morning, and I'm hoping for a significant loss again. It's not me being unhealthy, I just lose weight fast on Paroxetine. I am one of the rare lucky ones because I hear the opposite is true with most people. I actually don't take it for depression either. I take it for Asperger's. :-) Yup, who would have thunk, right? I have a very mild form of autism, which seems to run on my mom's side a bit, and my sister does too, except hers is more pronounced than mine. I take it and I can socialize with people and not flock off to the side.

Yes, I'm autistic. Get over it, you wish you were too. :-)

Anyway, I wasn't expecting to share that, but you know how blogging goes. :-) I hope everyone has a fantastic day and is blessed! :-)

Day 32: Yes, I Supplement!

Good morning, just with a mini bowl of pretzels and hummus. It is surprisingly enough a very good combination.

I lost my first few page likes today. Yesterday I posed with a bottle of Thyro-Drive and I lost a few likes. I'm not sure if it's due to that or just a coincidence. But I wanted to make some things clear from the get-go: Yes, I supplement for weight loss. No, I'm not ashamed of it.

I would probably be one of the first people to discredit the supplements I take had I not experienced it myself. I heard it on the radio. Yes, they advertise on the radio and they do it on practically every radio station in St Louis. I was naturally cynical of anything I heard on the radio, just like Smilin Bob and everything else they put on the radio these days. My trip to S2 had nothing at all to do with supplements but to grab a bumper sticker offered by my absolute favorite radio show to listen to in the morning. I went to the Chesterfield location of Supplement Superstores first and was absolutely surprised at how nice and friendly everyone was. I was almost 30 lbs heavier at that point, and had gotten severely snarked at the last time I went into one of those type of shops. They offered me a free water and sent me home with some samples.

I would have never taken them if I hadn't had a review blog at the time. Still kind of depressed at the time, I said, "Well, if they don't work at least they'll finish the job." Not the best attitude to have, but hey, sometimes you just feel that way. I decided to take them, and it totally... well, it totally did nothing at first.

"But Shelly," you say, "It's a diet pill!" Hold your horses. It's a diet supplement, and it doesn't work if you're not willing to put the work in. You can't just take a pill and have all your worries and weight troubles go away. It's not realistic. It simply puts you in the right frame of mind so if you want to work out, than you can.

Along with the rest of my supplements and one prescribed med, this was very helpful in curing a mild chemical imbalance. Yes, I said cured, in that as long as I take all as prescribed I have no more symptoms. I was able to drop all my meds except one, which I take because it's just a pain to get off of. It didn't do anything for my weight loss and I didn't mind at first.

But one day I just decided that enough was enough. After seeing some things and experiencing some things, I got in the gym and worked my butt off. I'm paying my way through college and plan on getting a personal trainer certification in a few months. I just did a lot of stuff that I wouldn't have been able to do otherwise.

So yes, I supplement. Yes, I'm proud of it and all I've accomplished. Yes, it is controversial. But no, I'm not going to stop and let my life go to pot just cause someone gets upset. It works for me, and I'm going to keep doing it. And it may just help you too. So don't judge. You're just jealous of my awesomeness. ;-)

One of the reasons I never settled.

-----
In other news, going to the Organization Expo at the college today. I want to get hooked up with the running club and learn about some more running clubs in the area. I'm think of going back to True Runner as well because they have some fun runs and things that don't look like they'd kill me if I did em. :-) I love the running community and enjoy all the cheerfulness and good-naturedness that seems to be a part of it.

Well, it's class time, we're doing density in the lab. No worries, I am plenty dense about chemistry so I'll fit right in. Have a wonderful day all!

Day 24.5: I'm an Overcomer!

My ankle is doing much better after a lot of walking today with my friend, which made me suspect it was not properly stretched or just cramped up from all the running. I went in the gym today and knocked out 8.57 miles on the bike between 80-88 RPM. I lowered the resistance level ever so slightly (from 6 to 5) but it didn't seem to make too huge of a difference. I feel amazing and look forward to my next cardio/strength day on Friday! :-)

I have realized today what a different person I am now. I tell people when they hurt my feelings or I feel they've overstepped their bounds and I am no longer shy about it. I am not necessarily mean, but whoever is bothering me knows that I am upset. It is so weird to finally be able to say that I am an assertive person. I have never been an assertive person, and I thought I would never be an assertive person. It just doesn't run in my family; my mom literally took a college credit course on how to be assertive and interact with people. I never did find out her grade though, lol. Either way, I am making new strides physically, emotionally, and spiritually and it feels great.

I am almost out of supplements after two months of using them. It's time to visit Jake at Supplement Superstores and restock. You may think I'm weird for my supplement obsession, but I honestly will not go anywhere else except S2 for them. Complete Nutrition always kind of scares me in the mall because every time I walk by there, the guys inside there give me creepy eyes!!! Either they think I'm hot or they think I'm a good candidate for a sale. I briefly considered going in there but the same dude was there with the creepy eyes and I was like, nooooo, moving along now. If you live anywhere near St Louis, visit Supplement Superstores ASAP. If for no other reason that they give you free samples, lol. :-D

I have become obsessed also with the Healthy Choice Café Steamers. They are portable and great after a long workout when a heavy meal is just too much. I love the pasta, but I am branching out and trying some meat entrees (bad former vegan Shelly!) because I love having a variety of food. Cause trust me, nothing will make you stall out faster than eating the same thing every night. I remember when I was a teenager trying a weird version of a diet and literally eating the same thing every day (at only about 800 calories a day, don't try this at home, kids!) and never lost a thing. In fact, I think I gained because my body was in starvation mode. Now I eat a variety of things at ~1700 calories a day. :-)

Anyhoo, I am full of talking today and I think it's time to get some food. Be blessed all and have a fantastic day!

Day 19: Ch-ch-changes

First of all, love that song! :-)

I have been noticing some changes. Today I ran 15 consecutive minutes and was actually running longer than anyone else in the gym! They were doing running/walking intervals and I was powering away on that run like a total beast. That felt so awesome. I used to be the chica not even going above 3.0 on the treadmill. I watched everyone else run and I wanted to do it so bad. Now, I'm slower than them but leaving them in the dust as far as time.

I have been opening my mind to religion as well. I have not had good experiences with churches because I am SO different than most of the people there, I am very matter-of-fact and I ask a lot of questions which sometimes gets on people's nerves. Besides, I have struggled with a number of sins in the past that are too personal to share and I was always embarrassed to come to church because I was afraid someone would find out and be judgmental towards me. Because of that, I built up walls and pushed people away in church so they wouldn't see my sins. Silly logic, I know, but when you're scared you do some dumb stuff.

I have a Joyce Meyer obsession. I have mentioned it in previous entries and it still holds true. I'm not like hanging out in Fenton trying to find her or anything, but I do watch her show every morning and read some of her books. There is this series she has done that literally took 3 times before I could watch it all the way through because it was so hard to wrap my head around. It was about deception and compromise, a very meaty sermon indeed. That wasn't really the part that got me. She says towards the end of the first part of the sermon, "Listen, God can give you a better life than the one you're living now." It's ironic, because right now I think I have a great life and an awesome thing going for me. I thought, "I could have an even better life WITH God? I have a great life now, and that must mean with God it will be even more awesome!" Naivety, yes, but get over it. We all have our catalysts.

So, with that in mind I am putting a different bend on this website. Since Vegan365 is going the way of the dodo bird (sorry, all of you that are fans, it is going down later this afternoon), I am changing the name of the site. It will be called: Girl on Fire: From Underdog to Beastmode. I'm so excited about the name change and the lifestyle change and I'm excited to share it with you!

I hope all of you have a blessed day and enjoy life!

Day Nine: Actual Next Day!! Mind is BLOWN.

Hi everyone, 11 page views today? Man you are all amazing. :-)

I finally got on after one day, so technically this is day nine!
-------
I went to yoga class this morning, reluctantly. I have not been to an exercise class in ages, and generally speaking I don't like them. I'm always the token fat chick in the class; sweating, not in proper workout clothes, and just somewhat of a spectacle to myself and others. So, needless to say, I generally avoid them like the plague. But today, I decided to be different. I got in, and true to form I was the sweaty fat chick (but there was an old guy in my class who was borderline flashing his backside on the bending moves, so I felt better, lol) but I felt different this time.

Sure, I was screaming inside my head, things I prefer not to repeat, but I feel like I made the right decision trying to take care of my body. Ever since I took some serious steps towards reevaluating my life, I'm starting to realize that without exception that everyone starts out that way. They might not be as heavy as I was and am, but they feel out of place, like the token something-or-another. They feel like everyone is staring at them and judging them when in reality everyone feels the same way about the way they look and could care less what you look like. In fact, I saw someone more overweight than me totally killing it on the elliptical and my immediate thought was, "Get it girl!" I was so psyched to see her kicking ass like that. :-)

I found something kind of cool today when I was taking my supplements this morning. I noticed on the bottom of the 1st Phorm container that holds the Thyro-Drive I take every morning there is printed in script, "Never Settle." I had never noticed it before and thought it was super cool. As I fought my usual inertia, I kept repeating these words to myself, "Never settle." And I think that after some evaluation of my own life there is some truth and motivation in that phrase.

I have settled my whole life. For crappy jobs, abusive family members and boyfriends, for programs in school I didn't enjoy in the slightest, for being unkempt and overweight my whole life. I was always saying "Yes," to someone or something without considering my own opinion. I just continually let myself go without considering that I could take my life in another direction. Maybe today I can decide for once not to settle and to say "Yes," to myself.

Didn't think you would get poetic turn of phrase, didya? Well luckily, today you did. I hope you all have a great day and remember not to settle!
